AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) are becoming much more common within both businesses and public locations known as PAD's (Public Access Defibrillators).
With cardiac arrest accounting for around 75,000 deaths in the UK every year, a casualty's only chance of survival is a shock from an AED.
With sudden cardiac arrest, time is of the essence, as every minute that passes before the heart receives a shock from an AED, means the casualty has about 10% less chance of survival. The out-of-hospital SCA (sudden cardiac arrest) survival rate is 10%.
Description: Although there is no need for formal training for using an AED due to their ease of use, even for the untrained rescuer, along with the fact the AED will only work if an abnormal heart rhythm is detected, it is still advisable to receive periodic AED training as a refresher.
